DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. CAL. 44WCF. (44-40) Special order rifle with 24″ oct. to round bbl, half nickel front sight with filed down short semi-buckhorn rear sight, button magazine, case colored receiver, lever and hammer. About 3X checkered wood with straight grip and crescent steel buttplate with trap. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle with a 14″ stock with 1/2″ drop. Shipped May 23, 1882 and returned for repair Sept. 22, 1882, just 4 months later. Close examination of the serial number discloses that the orig. numbers (89320) are completely over stamped by the same numbers. The orig. stamped numbers were extremely faint and almost non-visible and probably accounts for why Winchester re-struck the numbers. The factory letter confirms the numbers are correct and furthermore, the orig. factory assembly numbers “1839”appear on the side of the lower tang and on the inside of the toe of the buttplate. Also accompanied by a form from the Dr. R.L. Moore Jr. Collection indicating he had purchased this rifle in July 66′ from L.C. Jackson of Dallas, TX. SN 89320 CONDITION: Very good to excellent. The bbl retains about 90% orig. blue, slightly thin on the sides of the round area with only fine edge wear thereafter. The receiver retains 85-90% faded case colors, bright in the sheltered areas, stronger on the left sideplate and bottom. Brilliant on the top tang where it was apparently sheltered by a tang sight. The lever and hammer retain about 95% fading case colors. The foreend cap and buttplate retain 70-80% faded case colors. The wood is sound with moderately worn diamond points and retains about 95% strong orig. varnish. Excellent bright shiny bore. 4-45472 JL322 (17,500-30,000)
