RARE DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. CAL. 45-75. Special order rifle with 28″ oct. to round bbl with full matted top, the caliber marking is on the right hand flat, button magazine, checkered wood, pistol grip stock with black fleur di lis insert and checkered hard rubber buttplate. The bbl is fitted with special order “FW FREUND “sights which include a front sight that resembles a Sheard with slot for an ivory insert, which is missing. The rear sight is semi-buckhorn with an elliptical peep hole and notch with sheet ivory insert and double rail elevator. These sights are made famous by President Theodore Roosevelt who ordered them on a number of his rifles. The receiver, lever and hammer are case colored. Accompanied by a letter from the Winchester Gun Museum dated August 20, 1964 to Dr. R.L. Moore Jr. identifying this rifle as being shipped on July 24, 1885. Also accompanied is a copy of a book page regarding Freund rear sights. Obviously this rifle was part of Dr. Moore’s collection that was sold upon his demise. Additional research may make a Roosevelt connection. SN 45716 CONDITION: Very good, plus. The bbl retains about 90% strong orig. blue turning slightly dull with minor edge wear and a small ding or two. The receiver retains 40-50% case colors, bright in the sheltered areas, stronger on the left side with the balance silver to brown patina. The loading gate retains about 75% thin niter blue. The lever retains 50-60% case colors, strong in the sheltered areas. The hammer retains 75-80% strong case colors. The highly figured shell-grain center crotch cut wood is bright with strong checkering having only minor diamond point wear and retains 93-95% strong bright orig. varnish. The buttplate is sound, beginning to turn chocolate. Excellent, bright shiny bore. 4-45471 JL321 (12,500-22,500)
