AMERICAN FEDERAL PERIOD SCRIMSHAW RUM HORN. A very attractive 1808 dated rum keg fashioned from cow horn and scrimshawed by an experienced hand. The keg measures approximately 5+” wide with flat walnut plugs in each end. Each plug is about 4″ in diameter. Small iron tacks secure the plugs to the horn. At the top is an old, but perhaps not orig., wood stopper with two iron staples on either side of the spout. The spout section is decorated with 4 concentric inscribed circles. Each end is engraved with a single line and scalloped edge decoration. Both sides of the horn keg have scrimshaw 5-point stars, with shading and set within a single line circle. On one side, the star is flanked by the initials “W” and “T.” The other has the date “1808″ inscribed above. The bottom has a scrimshaw sawtooth design. CONDITION: Excellent, the color is pleasing and scrimshaw is authentic. 4-45423 CW (500-1,000)
