ELABORATELY CARVED SMALL POWDER HORN. This little horn measures approx. 6-1/2″ body length with oval plug 1-7/8″ x 1-5/16″ secured with several wooden pegs. The spout is aged brass with a crude homemade spring. The entire body of the horn is covered with fine carvings depicting pilgrims in several different poses, some holding halbreds and other figures that appear to be Indians. Another panel that appears to be Adam and Eve covering themselves with fig leaves and accepting an apple from a serpent in a tree. Vertically beside this panel is carved “ADAMENMAN” with the N’s carved backwards as they are wherever they are used on the horn. Another panel depicts a pilgrim with a dragon, another still appears to be an angel with a harp. All the figures are accompanied by carved words and letters that this cataloger can not decipher. One panel has the date “1695”. CONDITION: Very fine being a dark mellow patina with small old damage at the plug end. An extremely rare, very early and possibly historic American horn 4-45475 JL315 (500-1,000)
