RARE NORTHWEST FLINTLOCK TRADE GUN CHIEFS’ MUSKET BY SARGANT & SON. ca. 1800.CAL. about 60. Beautiful trade musket with 34-1/2″ oct. to round bbl with full-length stock, brass ramrod guides, large iron trigger guard and long scaled serpent brass sideplate secured with three screws. Appears to be orig. flint with possibly a bushed flash hole. Top flat is stamped with a sitting fox mark and “LONDON”. The lock plate has the makers’ name vertically behind the hammer with a touch mark in front of the hammer of a fox with the initials “IA” over “WARRANTED”. There is also a small fox cartouche in a circle on the right side of the buttstock. The stock has raised teardrop side panels and a raised teardrop back of the top tang. The buttplate is flat brass. A similar example appears in “The Northwest Gun” by Charles Henson. CONDITION: Very good, plus. The bbl retains an even dark brown patina. The lock plate is a medium to dark gray with some light pitting. The hammer is possibly a replacement with artificial aging. The stock is sound and retains most of an old refinish with good hand-rubbed patina. 4-45356 JL263 (4,500-6,000)
