WHATLEY CONVERSION CHIEFS’ MUSKET. ca. 1810 CAL. about 60. Scarce Chiefs’ musket with 34-7/8″ stepped oct. to round bbl with small pinched iron front sight, converted from flintlock to percussion. The top flat has three British proofs and a seated fox in a circle with the mark “LONDON”. The lock plate has the makers’ name vertically behind the hammer with the small circle logo in front of the hammer. It has two decorative brass ramrod guides with a matching brass nose pipe. The trigger guard is light iron and very large. The sideplate is a scaled serpent secured with three large screws. The buttstock has a narrow wrist with a deep comb and smooth brass buttplate. A similar example appears in “The Northwest Gun” by Charles Henson. CONDITION: Fair to good. The bbl and trigger guard retain a dark brown patina with heavy pitting at the breech end of the bbl and on the lock plate. There has been a repair on the left side of the forestock with several small missing slivers from the bbl channel. The buttstock has several nicks and dings, small gouge and some hammer marks. There is burn out behind the nipple area. The lock screws are recent replacements. 4-45354 JL262 (3,000-4,000)
