DUBLIN CASTLE SHORT LAND PATTERN BROWN BESS. CAL. about 80. 2nd Model Brown Bess with 42-3/8″ round bbl with integral front sight/bayonet lug, 1-pc walnut stock, brass furniture, three ramrod guides and brass nose pipe. The lock plate has “DUBLIN CASTLE” vertically behind the hammer with the cypher of King George III, a crown over GR in front of the hammer. The top of the bbl is very nicely engraved with a number “23” which has been identified as the 23rd Welsh Fusiliers, who were very active fighting in America during the Revolutionary War at which time this musket was manufactured and was very likely a field replacement in that war. The large brass acorn shaped thumb plate is engraved “K”over “75”. Apparently, a Unit and rifle number. The trigger guard is heavy brass with ball-end finials and a long tail brass sideplate with ball-end. The buttplate has a medium length 2-stepped buttplate tang. The sling loops appear to be orig. and are very wide. A fine historic Revolutionary War firearm. CONDITION: About very good. The iron retains a dark brown crusty patina. The brass is very dark patina. The wood is sound with a small crack in front of the lock plate and missing a chip at the foreend tip and retains a fine old hand-rubbed patina, possibly an ancient refinish. 4-45515 JL448 (3,000-4,000)
