FANCY PRESENTATION GRADE U.S. MODEL 1872 CAVALRY OFFICER’S TYPE FRATERNAL SWORD INSCRIBED TO 1ST LT. GEORGE SMITH, 1ST BATT., 1ST REGIMENT NEW YORK. This presentation grade sword signed M.C. Lilley is patterned directly after the U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer’s Sword with notable differences in the decoration for The Knights of Pythias. The blade is single edged and slightly curved with etched decoration on both faces. The decorations show classical Roman figures with shields having the letters “F.C.B.” etched within. An open lily is also a repeating theme within the scroll work. On one face is a panel etched with the following presentation “Geo. Smith-1st Lieut. And Adjt./1st Batt. 1st Regt. N.Y.” At the ricasso the blade is signed by a crown on the obverse and “The M.C. Lilley Co./No. 13 W. 30th/New York” on the reverse. The three branch guard of gilded cast brass is cast with a lily, crossed Roman swords and armor in high relief. On either side of the grip are the letters “U” and “R.” The pommel is a lion’s head and the grip of sharkskin with twisted wire wrap. The scabbard is of nickel plated steel with heavily cast and decorated gilt brass openwork mounts. The mounts are decorated with lilies, a Roman solider and classical stands of arms. Fraternal organizations often used a member’s military rank and position when presenting a lodge sword. Lt. Smith was, likely, a member of the New York National Guard. CONDITION: Good, the blade is fairly bright with light fading to etched designs, the hilt is tight, however, the outer branch of the guard is severely bent. The grip is excellent. 4-45092 CW (500-700)
