EARLY NAVAL TYPE BOARDING AXE MARKED “W.CHANCE & SONS, EDGES MILLS.”. An example of a naval type boarding axe dating to the period 1840-60. Measures overall 16″ with a hand forged iron axe head with two wide, 5″ long mounting straps, axe head and spike. The head is secured by two iron rivets. The head is mounted to, what appears to be, its orig. haft of oak. The left face is stamped “W.C. HANES/EDGES MILLS” surmounted by a stamping of two crossed hammers or axes. CONDITION: Excellent, the iron axe head is dark and uncleaned with untouched patina. The haft is strong with some light splintering near the bottom and heavy wear near the head. 4-45426 CW (600-800)
