EARLY CUTLERY HANDLE EDWARD BARNES & SONS BOWIE KNIFE. Fine early Bowie with 8-3/4″ clip point flat ground blade, 1-1/8″ at the ricasso x 5/32″ thick. The hand guard is thin oval German silver with a fine repoussed double-sided tapered German silver cutlery handle with floral motifs and an early American spread-winged eagle at the pommel. The left side of the blade is etched with a spread-winged eagle clutching a riband bearing the makers’ name and there is variety of patriotic slogans including “AMERICANS ASK FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT IS RIGHT & SUBMIT TO NOTHING THAT IS WRONG” and “AMERICAN BOWIE KNIFE” and “THE UNITED STATED LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE” and “PROTECTED BY HER NOBLE AND BRAVE VOLUNTEERS”. The left ricasso is marked “EDWARD/BARNES & SONS/CELEBRATED/DIRK KNIFE”. Accompanied by its orig. fine leather sheath with German silver tip and throat with a frog stud. The left side of the sheath has a gold embossed spread-winged American eagle and the right side the bust of Liberty in a circle with 13 stars. Both edges are reeded with gold decoration. CONDITION: The blade retains most of its orig. polish with scattered light surface discoloration and some old cleaning marks. The handle and German silver parts are tarnished and dull. The sheath is flexed in one area but is sound and clean. 4-45082 JL319 (3,000-5,000)
