C CONGREVE LARGE DOUBLE EDGED BOWIE KNIFE. Spectacular early Sheffield Bowie by C. Congreve with 11-7/8″ double-edged diamond shaped blade, 1-1/2″ at the ricasso and 5/16″ thick. The cutting edge is 9-5/16″ long with a 2-5/8″ long ricasso with fluted and cross hatch decorated pyramid shape raised area on both sides bearing the makers’ name with Sheffield. It has a double German silver hand guard 3-1/8″ long x 1/8″ thick with fleur di lis decorated quillions. It has a modified coffin shaped handle with ivory scales secured with four German silver rivets and German silver shields on each side with a silver-plated frame and rectangular faceted integral pommel. Accompanied by its orig. leather covered sheath with German silver tip and throat. The sheath is lightly decorated with gold leaf on the edges. CONDITION: The blade is full, retaining some orig. polish but mostly a light cleaned patina with scattered light surface pitting, primarily toward the tip. The ricasso area is brighter and cleaner. The hand guard and handle are excellent with a fine line or two in the ivory around the rivets. The sheath is sound, flexed above the tip with a small separation in one edge in that area. There is slight loss of finish to the leather which shows moderate wear. The throat is missing the frog stud. An outstanding large early Bowie. 4-45084 JL320 (3,000-5,000)
