AMERICAN PRE-CIVIL WAR SOUTHERN PRESENTATION MILITIA OFFICER’S SWORD TO CAPTAIN A. HENDERSON “LONE STAR GUARD” BY W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS. A rare opportunity to own a classic pre-Civil War southern militia officer’s sword presented to Captain A. Henderson from the “Lone Star Guard” in 1854. The sword is a high grade officer’s sword having a straight double edged blade with a single central fuller and etched decoration on both faces. The sword is signed near the ricasso with an etched panel “W.H. Horstmann & Sons/Philadelphia.” The crossguard, in “bow tie” form, is of gilt cast brass with flying eagles, liberty caps and acanthus leaf designs cast in high relief. Two square langets terminate the hilt surmounted by a gilt ferrule and a faceted and engraved silver grip. The pommel cap is a standing eagle on globe having a double chain guard from the eagle’s mouth falling to the cross guard. The scabbard is of gilt brass with heavily engraved decoration on the front face. The engraving depicts American trophies, Roman war instruments and rococo scrolls. The carry mounts are permanently affixed cast brass brackets and the drag a similarly designed affixed scroll. On the reverse of the scabbard is a small soldered scroll reading “Horstmann & Sons/Makers/Philad.” and the inscription: Presented to/ Capt. A. Henderson/by the Officers and Members of the/Lone Star Guard/Feb.y 22nd 1854. Captain Henderson’s military record during the Civil War is not readily apparent. The “Lone Star Guard”, however, is listed in several sources as being a Texas regiment of local defense infantry. Therefore, this represents a rare opportunity to purchase a beautiful southern officer’s pre-Civil War militia officer’s sword with the possibility of research to locate Capt. A. Henderson in the service of the Confederate States of America. CONDITION: Very fine, the blade retains much of its armory finish with frosty etching, just a couple of minor edge nicks and a few spots of dark surface rust. The gilt is worn from approximately 50% of the hilt and scabbard but retains a nice untouched patina overall. The scabbard is fine with one light crease about half way up. 4-45116 CW (4,500-6,000)
