HIGH GRADE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD, INSCRIBED TO CAPT. HITCHCOCK, 153RD ILLINOIS VOLUNTEERS. An unsigned European made non-regulation Staff & Field officer’s sword of presentation grade. The blade is single edged 31″ long with a slight curve. The faces are heavily etched with American trophies, floral sprays and a spread winged eagle and “U.S.” The hilt is of cast brass, gold washed and cast in deep relief. The half basket guard displays a panalopy of flags, with a tilted U.S. shield, drums, cannons and a liberty cap above, all resting on a bed of oak leaves. The edge of the guard is scalloped with a single knuckle bow rising to a fancy cast pommel with a classical head on the back and a pineapple cap stain. The grip is of cast German silver with Acanthus leaf sprays top and bottom and a wrap of laurel. The knuckle bow retains its orig. gilt cloth sword knot. The scabbard is of steel, plated in German silver. The top and middle mounts are of gilded brass in leaf-like design. The drag is heavily engraved and has the casting of a running flag bearer on the face. Between the top and middle mounts, the scabbard is engraved: “Presented to/CAPT. C.H. HITCHCOCK/by Co. K 153 Regt. Ill. Vol. Inf./March 3, 1865.” The 153rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry was recruited as a one year regiment on February 27, 1865. Captain Charles H. Hitchcock is listed as Captain of Company K on the day of muster. The regiment served on railroad guard duty for the Nashville & Chattanooga RR, was transferred to Memphis on July 1, 1865 and discharged on September 24, 1865. CONDITION: The blade is excellent showing much of its factory finish and frosty etching. The hilt has lost some of its gold wash but retains a medium uncleaned patina. The German silver scabbard is dirty. 4-45113 CW (4,000-6,000)
