INCREDIBLE GROUP OF ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD CONFEDERATE BURIAL SITE RELICS EXCAVATED NEAR “THE SUNKEN ROAD.”. Recovered in the early 1960’s from a section of privately owned land just behind “The Sunken Road” on the Antietam Battlefield (Maryland), these relics are obviously from a grave site containing several Confederate soldiers. The lot consists of two large sections of preserved cloth, one a homespun butternut colored wool and the other a from a linen shirt. There are pieces of shoes, leather belts, a cap box, bayonet scabbard, belt with Confederate brass “wishbone” tongue frame buckle, various buttons, a lead canteen spout and other interesting relics. Included are the relics of a pair of brogans with X-ray film showing the possible inclusion of human bone inside. An extremely rare collection from a burial trench near one of the hardest fought sections of a great American Civil War battlefield. CONDITION: All pieces are excavated and show heavy corrosion and deterioration. The cloth is a remarkable survivor!! With a little cleaning and preservative treatment, these wonderful relics would make an historic and impressive exhibit.
