AMERICAN MILITIA INFANTRY CHAPEAU. A good example of an early American militia period chapeau being a 10″ tall bi-corn Infantry officer’s chapeau made of beaver skin. The front face is decorated with two, 2″ wide woven decorative silk bands positioned diagonally. The center is decorated with a large silk cockade measuring 7″ in diameter and overlaid with four strands of twisted decorative silver wire braid secured by a single silver ball type button at the base. The frontal decoration is finished with a silver wire tassel on a string which falls below the base of the hat. The back side of the chapeau is plain. All interior finishes are missing. A classic early American militia chapeau dating to the period 1815-1830. CONDITION: Fair. While the chapeau presents a wonderfully aged appearance, there are numerous breaks at the edges with minor losses to beaver felt. The outside surfaces are worn smooth and all decorative material is worn with edges tattered. No interior lining remains. 4-45411 CW (1,400-1,600)
