SUPERB PAIR OF CIVIL WAR DIARIES BELONGING TO JAMES H. ROBSON, CO. E, 8TH NEW YORK CAVALRY. These two diaries are complete, mostly in period ink and record Robson’s war experiences beginning on January 1, 1862 and continuing through December 31, 1862 in one diary and other begins January 1, 1864 and finishes on December 31, 1864. Much other information, cash accounts, list of officers, etc. are present in both. Both are kept in an old (not Civil War period) denim case. 1) The 1862 diary is in a leather bound book with closing strap embossed “Diary 1862.” Inside the front cover is “James H. Robson/Johnsons Creek/Niagra, Co./NY.” Also recorded are his revolver serial numbers (appears that he had two at different times). Each day recorded in period ink starts with the weather and two or three sentences of activities. He records the receipt of Sharps carbines, new caps, uniform items, etc. along the way. Notes on the battle of Winchester and Harpers Ferry are noted around May, and September. There is much about saber drill, changes in regimental commanders and general statements about health, etc. A cash account is kept in the rear with a complete roster of Co. E, 8th Regt. N.Y. Cavalry. CONDITION: The leather cover is torn in a couple of places, pages are lightly foxed and yellowed from age. All handwriting is clear and exceptionally legible. 2) The second diary is paper bound and titled “Daily Pocket Remembrancer 1864” Robson’s writing is much the same here. He begins with picket duty near Warrenton, Culpeper and on to Cedar Mountain. Records battle action at Hanover Junction and Malvern Hill. He talks of being wounded on a charge toward the Nottowa River, then off toward Petersburg, etc. A lot of small battle action here, railroad destruction, taking and guarding Rebs., etc. CONDITION: Only the back cover remains, pages are dog eared and a few are loose but none missing. A wonderful pair of Union cavalry diaries, well executed in ink, very legible and full of lots of interesting information and battle accounts. 4-45225 CW (2,000-3,000)
