FINE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S CASED DRESS CHAPEAU. A rarely seen piece of important Civil War headgear. A fine dress chapeau manufactured and marked “The Warnock Uniform Company/ 19 & 21 W. 31st St./New York” both in the case and interior of crown. The beaver felt hat stands 5” tall with two wide silk ribbons laid diagonally across the front and a tilted cockade of pleated black silk ribbon overlaid by a rectangular gilt cloth badge with an embroidered spreadwinged eagle and stars, secured by a three piece U.S. staff officer’s button at the base. Each tip of the chapeau is adorned with a large gilt wire tassel. The entire hat is overlaid with three black ostrich plumes. The interior has a 1 3/4″ wide cordovan leather sweat band and the crown is lined in quilted black silk marked in gold by the maker. The chapeau is held in a japanned tin case. CONDITION: Excellent. The chapeau shows little wear and is quite sharp. The case shows light scratching to exterior surfaces. 4-45410 CW (1,500-2,000)
