L. BIDDLE HALF-STOCK CONVERSION KENTUCKY RIFLE. CAL. 34. Fine early Kentucky with 36-3/4″ oct. bbl, small blade copper front sight with fixed rear sight. The top flat with the makers’ name in script behind the rear sight. Front half of the bbl has a metal ramrod rail with two brass guides and a brass nose pipe. The stock is very nicely figured tiger maple with brass furniture and eight lightly engraved brass inlays including an oval spreadwinged eagle on the small cheek piece. There are copper burn out plates before and after the nipple. The thumb plate is also lightly engraved as is the fine saddle guard. The lock is marked “LEMAN/LANCTR.PA”. The right side of the stock, in front of the simple brass patch box, is inscribed in old gold paint “THIS KENTUCKY RIFLE BELONGED TO LANCE MARTIN WHO SHOT HIS WIFE AT CURTLAND, OHIO AND THEN KILLED HIMSELF” with a number that is indecipherable. It has double set triggers, a brass trigger guard and crescent buttplate with a full-length brass comb. CONDITION: The metal is mostly a light gray under an old coat of dried oil. The stock is broken through the action but repairable and retains a heavy coating of oil and old finish. A fine old Kentucky in need of some TLC. 4-45714 JL345 (1,500-2,500)
