INDIAN USED AND MODIFIED BRITISH FLINTLOCK MUSKET. CAL. about 80. Early British flintlock musket with 46-3/8″ bbl. Brass furniture with a large banana shape lock marked “TOWER” vertically behind the hammer and “GR” in front of the hammer. The trigger guard is plain brass and the sideplate is 6-1/2″ long with three large screws and there is a large acorn shaped thumb plate on the wrist. The buttstock has been modified to flat sides and square edged and inlaid with hundreds of small iron nails in geometric patterns. The wrist is wrapped with crusty, dried leather and the fore stock has nine leather wraps interspersed with patterns of small iron nails. There remains three brass tacks in the rear leather wrappings and evidence that several others were lost during a period of use. This is a wonderful example of Indian adaptation. CONDITION: The exposed bbl and iron all have a very dark patina with fine rust pitting. The wood is very dark, smoked and oil stained. The lock is functional. 4-45105 JL267 (1,500-3,000)
