FINE JOHNSON MODEL 1817 RIFLE. CAL. 54. 35-7/8” bbl. Has “V.T” marked on top of bbl in front of “US” / P / “JN”. The lock has standard markings and both lock and bbl are dated 1824. NSN PROVENANCE: Originally purchased from Clayton Kelley of Pittsford, VT 1969. CONDITION: The bbl and patch box cover retain about 75% of their orig. brown, orig. bright bbl bands. The lock plate is gray with traces of case hardening pattern. The trigger guard and buttplate retains some orig. brown mixed with light surface rust and pitting. The brass tip ramrod is also bright. The stock, which has a slightly fancy tiger stripe at the wrist, has a clear “JW” cartouche on the left side. There is a vise mark at the rear of the bbl, but the lock appears to be orig. flint.
