IMPORTANT 20″ HANDPAINTED ROYAL VIENNA DISPLAY PLAQUE “CARIOLANUS”. Imposing porcelain plaque featuring a rectangular hand-painted scene of the Roman General Coriolanus, probably inspired by the Shakespeare play “Cariolanus”. Central painting is very well detailed with romantic female figures pleading with the General, soldiers in full uniform with weaponry, with encampment scene and landscape in background. Scene framed with raised gilt gadrooned border and banded with Greek key decoration. On the four edges are four small hand-painted scenes of Putti in various mischievous poses. Entire plaque having fine raised gold adamesque decoration with dragons and masks. Plaque has unglazed back with blue beehive mark and title “Cariolanus”. Signed with initials lower left “C.B.”. Last half 19th Century. Retaining period soldered hanger. Gaius Marcius Coriolanus reputedly lived in the 5th Century and received the title “Coriolanus ” because of his exceptional valor at the Roman siege of the Volscian City of Corioli.
