MAYAN CAMPECHE PAINTED POTTERY PLATE WITH CHIEF.600-900 AD. Mexico. A ritual tomb plate with rattle leg, painted on both sides with care and great effort with beautiful defining lines which the Mayan scribes are famous for. In the center is an elite personage seated cross-legged on a mat, he makes fluid arm gestures expelling scrolls and he wears a wonderful turban-like spangled headdress, necklace, eaflares, a fancy lioncloth with complex knot behind and has tattoo or body paint markings. The figure also has a strong Mayan nose and fine facial features. SIZE: 10-5/8″ d X 4-3/4″ h. PROVENANCE: Howard Nowes Ancient Art. The Estate of Anthony M. Kurland Jr of Maine.
