CASED MODEL OF THE DEMONSTRATION VESSEL “TURBINIA” 1897 BY WM. HITCHCOCK. Late 20th century. cased model of the demonstration vessel “Turbinia” constructed in 1897. Designed by Sir Charles Parsons in 1894 and built by C.A. Parsons and Brown and Wood in 1897. SIZE: Ship: 36″ l. Case” 39 l x 7 d x 17″ h. PROVENANCE: Ship was originally owned by the Marine Steam Turbine Company Ltd. 1894-1908. Turbinia was designed by Sir Charles Parsons, inventor and builder of Parsons Turbines. She was built to test and demonstrate the advantage of turbine vs. reciprocating engine propulsion. The Turbinia took part at the Royal Navy Review for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1897. William E. Hitchcock (1928-2006) was a builder of fine ship models for nearly fifty years, best known for his stylized, decorative models crafted with museum quality workmanship. Several of his models are on display at important museums including the Peabody Essex Museum and the Mystic Seaport Museum. CONDITION: Excellent. 9-91662 (1,800-2,000)
