LOT OF BOOKS, JOURNALS, PHOTOGRAPHS & MICROSCOPE BELONGING TO DR. EDWARD R. SQUIBB (Founder of E.R. Squibb & Sons-Pharmaceutical Company). The lot consists of 1) 13-1/4″ x 8-3/4″ unpublished 236 page handwritten journal written aboard the USS Cumberland from Monday, December 17, 1849 thru June 7, 1850. The daily entries are filled with personal observations including several entries about the small pox epidemic and the treatment of those afflicted for at one time there was a small US ship that was moored for just housing and treating small pox patients. He refers to several sailors that died of small pox and also the horrible task of disinfecting the hospital brig. There is an entry involving the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. Much of the time was spent in the Mediterranean. A fascinating and thorough reflection of two years in an important time in his life. The journal’s outside binding titled Private E.R. Squibb, the interior “Private Journal Mediterranean US Frigate Cumberland 1949 Vol 2d. 2) 13-1/4″ x 8-1/4” journal titled Private, inside cover “Private Journal Edward R. Squibb, July 1851 Volume 7. This is also believed to be an unpublished journal. Starting Monday, July 8, 1851 and ending Monday, September 8, 1851. It appears that this journal is during a time he is in Charlestown, Mass. 3) 12-1/4″ x 10″ bound letter copy journal. The letters start February 8, 1888 and go to page 407 ending May 23, 1891. 4) A 8″ x 11” private compiled book titled United States Naval Record of Edward R. Squibb 1847 to 1857, dated April 26, 1939. The typed pages interspersed with photographs of the ships he was on. 5) Two volume set “Journal of Edward Robinson Squibb M.D. 1819-1900”. Privately printed 1930 (a rare set held by the family). 6) Two volume set The Collected Papers of Edward Robinson Squibb M.D. 1819-1900, published on the 50th Anniversary 1988. 7) Small booklet “Squibb’s Trade List July 15, 1910”. 8) A small personal diary of E.R. Squibb, 1874 thru July. 9) Small booklet American Journal of Pharmacy 1901. 10) Booklet by E.H. Squibb 1904. 11) Also included is a cased microscope which was in the family’s possession which may have belonged to Squibb later in his life. It is by the Spencer Lense Co., Buffalo, NY with a serial number 12330. 11) Three framed photographs of Squibb along with a Chemist Club 1901 Proclamation. SIZE: As noted. PROVENANCE: Estate of Edward R. Squibb, III, originally from the Brooklyn, NY home. CONDITION: Two journals in very good condition. The copy book with broken binding and rough edges.
