ART NOUVEAU MARQUETRY BLANKET CHEST SIGNED P. GUTH.

Late 19th Century Nancy, France. The rectangular case with hinged sloping lid joined to and raised on fluted pilasters terminating in shaped square feet. Decorated overall with exotic figured hardwood marquetry depicting a scene of woodsman carrying bundles of faggots, accompanied by dogs, in a snowy winter landscape. The side and front panels decorated overall with foliate marquetry. Note: Paul Guth, born in Paris, was a painter and designer of applied art who probably worked some in the shop of Emile Galle in Nancy, France. In 1907, he created a small study of furniture at Nancy Arts. His work clearly belongs to the style of “ecole de Nancy.” A nearly identical example of this chest is ill in the book “Galle Furniture” by Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha. See plate 6 page 324. This example bears the Galle signature. The work of Guth is the same quality level as those of Galle or Majorelle, but his productions are less abundant and, therefore, more rare. SIZE: 26” H 34 ½” L 18 ½” D PROVENANCE: Sotheby’s NY lot 757 September 17th 2001, From a fine private Long Island, NY collection. CONDITION: Condition: the chest has been refinished with restoration some losses to veneers on edges of case, otherwise good. 9-93427 (800-1,200) – Lot 2652
