PATENT MODEL “OMNIBUS” AUTOMATON.

1852 Philadelphia. Patent office model of a framed mechanical contrivance for registering the fare paid by passengers of a bus or train. Featuring an elaborately cast figure of a gentleman with mechanical arm holding mallet to strike bell as driver or conductor activates lever indicating new passenger. With keywind clockwork mechanism inside wooden case, the front with gilt frame and glass shadow box revealing dial, bell and striker. A label on reverse “H.O. Deschamps Philadelphia PA Impt. in omnibus register, pat. March 2 1852.” Accompanying this lot is a copy of the patent office report relative to this mechanism. SIZE: 14-1/2″ dia.
