CLASSICAL EMPIRE MAHOGANY AND GILT-DECORATED COMMODE. First quarter 19th century. Possibly Boston, School of Duncan Phyfe. The rectangular top above the conforming labeled case, fitted with three long graduated drawers, the uppermost with recessed ebonized panel with gilt cast-bronze mount, the center drawer with arched recessed panel above the third drawer, flanked by free-standing Corinthian columns with cast gilt bronze capitals and bases, raised on carved gilded claw feet. SIZE: 36″ h. x 33-1/2″ case w./36″ overall w. x 20″ d. PROVENANCE: Purchased from Sweetwater Bottom Plantation, Duluth, Georgia, where it was part of the furnishings in the replica of Petit Trianon, second home of Marie Antoinette. CONDITION: Retains original cleaned surfaces. Gilding and mounts original. Backboards original. Brass hardware old replacements. Old professional veneer patches. Very good color and patina, but with surface scratches in top. Mahogany veneers over pine. Remnant of old label mounted on backboard. 9-90204 (1,000-2,000)
