NEW YORK NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER.1814 New York. Finely worked with cotton thread on linen background, primarily in chain stitch, satin stitch and cross stitch, having a margin on either side and across the top consisting of pots with meandering flowers, accented with the figures of two honey bees. Central motif being a house on the hill having birds and insects in flight, trees and flowers in the yard, a dog with collar and four sheep. The text, a transcription of Alexander Pope’s poem “Dying Christian”. Along bottom edge “Sally Peny, her work done, New York, May 1814″. SIZE: Image 15″ x 12”. CONDITION: Overall very good, with uniform thread color, slightly toned linen, stain upper left portion and a small amount of thread pulling. Mounted in later frame. 9-93475 (800-1,200) – Lot 2470
