EXCEPTIONAL WATERCOLOR AND CALLIGRAPHY CHRISTMAS DOUBLE PORTRAIT. On heavy paper, dated 1845 of New England origin. The watercolor shows a young man in green suit holding a document in hand, probably depicting a teacher and a young man in blue suit holding sextant, most likely a sea captain. They are both holding a central cartouche with salmon and blue border which is signed “John Ade”. The interior decorated with a calligraphy beneath a winged serpent. It reads “Christmas is a festival instituted to commemorate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” with a scrolled flourish below with date. The men in cartouche are on a grassy foreground. Housed in a period grain painted & gilt pine frame. SIZE: Sight: 13″ x 19-1/4″. Overall: 16-1/4″ x 22-1/4″. CONDITION: Some light toning, paper is in very good condition. 9-92063 (1,500-2,000)
