PAIR OF MATCHING FARMINGTON, MAINE LADIES AND GENTS COMBBACK WINDSOR CHAIRS. Early 19th century, New England. Fine and rare pair of Combback Windsor ladies’ and gent’s rockers with turned posts, bamboo turned spindles and arms, having an elevated scalloped combed back, the splayed base having tapering bamboo turnings, the rockers having scrolled backstops. Original Daniel Stewart, Farmington, Maine labels under seat of both chairs. Stencil painted in the early 20th century and signed “Stenciled and painted by Viola R. Sawtelle”. A 1910 example of Viola Sawtelle’s China painting is in the Maine State Museum collection. She was a member of the Augusta China Decorators’ Club. Daniel Stewart (1786-1827) was listed in early periodicals as a joiner, cabinet maker, and furniture maker. The Stewart family moved to Farmington from Martha’s Vineyard. SIZE: Gent’s chair: 42″ h.
