NELSON COOK (American/Canadian, 1808 – 1892) PORTRAIT OF ROCKWELL PUTNAM.

Oil on canvas half portrait of a middle aged man wearing a formal black suit and white shirt seated in an upholstered chair. Red drapery as background. Signed on crestrail “N. Cook Painter. 1867”. Housed in a period gilt portrait frame with some losses. Sitter and artist identified on back stretcher in modern writing. NOTE: Gideon Putnam, founder & owner of the Gideon Putnam Hotel & Resort which was taken over & run by his son, Rockwell Putnam at the time of his passing. Putnam was a prominent business man and was one of the founders of the Episcopal church of Saratoga Springs.
