CHARMING 19TH CENTURY WOOD FIREBOARD DECORATED WITH PORTRAIT OF YOUNG GIRL.

Fireboards in the early days were used to cover the fireplace during non-winter months to help to keep insects and other creatures out of the house and in some cases to decorate the room. While most decorated fireboards depicted rural scenes, this is somewhat unique and extremely charming. It is apparent that the owner who commissioned the fireboard originally had the artist paint a portrait of his young daughter. In this image, the girl in a semi-reclining pose with a beautiful straw bonnet filled with flowers, sits in her white dress and her dog lies at her feet. The image also with architectural structures in the background. The piece was probably done around 1835-1840 and is in untouched condition. It is absolutely delightful. The panel having bread board ends. SIZE: 36” wide, 24” high. CONDITION: A small age crack in the upper right hand corner and a couple of other small separations. Otherwise it appears to be untouched and original. 9-94523 (3,750-5,750) – Lot 2363a
