FINE ESKIMO WALRUS SCRIMSHAW TUSK PIPE. Last quarter 19th century, Northwest Coast. This nice example; the pipe bowl in the form of a hollowed walrus, the curved stem applied with carved folk art whales and a walrus. The side of the stem inscribed “Geo. W. Melville…”, additional writing and script illegible. NOTE: George W. Melville, United States Navy, Rear Admiral and Chief Engineer, California, 1870-1880. SIZE: 17-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From a private Utah collection. CONDITION: Very good with normal and expected wear to surfaces. Nice patina. 9-92890 (3,000-4,000)
