UNSIGNED (American, last half 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF CHARLES MERRIAM.

Oil on canvas half portrait of a young man in Civil War uniform. Housed in what was a fabulous patriotic period 19th Century frame. The frame’s crest has a four-pointed badge highlighting the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry of Woburn, Mass. This cross is flanked by two flags. The frame has shields at corners and the Massachusetts state seal. Merriam was a resident of Woburn, Mass. Enlisted on 8/10/1861 as a Sergeant and mustered into F Company of the Mass 22nd Infantry. He was killed on 5/10/1864 at Laurel Hill, Va. Note: accompanying the frame is a framed portrait collage of men in the Middlesex Rifle Range, 1902. 13 men are pictured, each with a multitude of medals. Size: 30″ x 34-1/2″. SIZE: Sight: 27″ x 22″ Overall: 52″ x 36″ CONDITION: Painting needs cleaning, craquelure; the frame has large losses, some of the elements still present. 7-70720 (600-900) – Lot 2297
