LARGE ARCHIVE OF LETTERS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND EPHEMERA ASSOCIATED WITH CHESTER W. BURTON (UPSTATE, NY) AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS.

Chester Burton, son of Hiram Burton (War of 1812 Veteran) was born March 9, 1831 and died October 1, 1916. He retained a large archive of letters and documents dating from the early 19th century to the early 20th century. His friends wrote him from all over the country. A quick search finds about 25 Civil War era letters of which five are written by James Ogden of Company D 9th New York Cavalry, four of which are on patriotic stationary. There are also letters from several other soldiers. Another interesting letter written by an early homesteader from Grizzly Gulch, Montana Territory to Chester W. Burton on February 27, 1867 “…the greatest blessing in a cabin is strychnine (made from a local weed)…the mice were about to carry us off, cutting up our blankets and all sorts of…but the unkindest cut of all was to eat it cut up in our flour sack…wouldn’t…bring a Canada Scotchman and never having been fed by Uncle Sam where every other kernel of rice represents a mouse…” Letter from Hiram Burton stating he was a soldier in the War of 1812, enlisted in Captain Foresythe’s company 1st Company US Rifleman and several letters requesting disability from his wounds received in the War of 1812. Another interesting letter in this group is Chester W. Burton’s draft notice dated August 18, 1863 stating he will be deemed a deserter if he does not report for service at the rendezvous at Dunkirk, NY. The envelope this document is contained states that Chester is exempt by reason of a substitute. A letter from Chester’s brother is written from Denver City, CO in 1861 speaking of troops in area guarding the town. Another letter from his brother states he is in Platte River 10 miles east of Ft. Kerney on his way to Denver in 1865. Several other war time and post war letters from his brother in the west are found. There are over 500 letters in this archive, mostly from the 1850s through the 1880s, mostly 1850s-1870s of various content that need to be viewed by perspective bidders. Also included are typical financial documents concerning deeds and money transactions, numerous pamphlets, numerous family photographs circa 1860-1900 mostly taken by upstate New York photographers, about 25 postcards; American and European all postally sent to Chester Burton on family, legal documents and about 20 land indentures from upstate New York mostly from the 1840s, numerous other ephemera pieces including 5 bound account books and diaries circa 1890s, various receipts and broadside verse, 30 or 40 canceled checks some with tax stamps attached others with decorative vignettes, membership certificates, newspaper clippings, many small advertising pieces and magic lantern slides.
