RARE CASED PAIR OF FRENCH PERCUSSION TWO BARREL COACH PISTOLS.

SN NSN. Double barrel pistols are quite scarce especially in large size like these and even more so in a matched pair. Each gun lock is marked “DUON” who was the retailer. Barrel ribs are marked in gold “DUON a NANCY”. Antoine Duon is listed in Archives of Nancy as a dealer and armorer in Nancy, France late 18th century through 1860. This particular pair of guns date circa 1845 and are well presented in a more recent custom made casing with bullet mold and a horn powder flask. Each gun is marked with a European proof of Crown / pair of crossed palm frons with 3-stars. Barrel internally has a partial makers mark or proof “…RAUD”. This is a fine pair of pistols that appear original and complete throughout. Guns are totally steel mounted except for small silver oval thumbplates. Guns are beautifully carved with checkered grips set in scalloped panels. SIZE: Guns: 12″ L, case: 11 3/4″ x 14 3/4″ x 3 3/4″ CONDITION: Guns measure 12″ overall with 6-1/4″ barrels that are 24 bore and so marked which translates to about 58 Cal. The bullet mold is the correct bore for these guns and is in overall fairly bright condition. The guns exhibit strong traces of original blue finish on barrels with balance a cleaned brown/plum overall. Remainder of mountings including locks, hammers, buttcaps and trigger guards are all case colored and about half of their original muted colors are still present. Stocks are well fit, sound and solid retaining about half their original varnished surfaces. Ramrods appear original and matching with integral metal worms and carved wood buttons varnished in same style as stocks. The accompanying casing appears made from a Victorian era cutlery case and has been compartmentalized to contain these guns quite well along with a shaped horn and brass powder measure, mold and an iron cleaning rod and worm. 9-94025 (5,000-8,000) – Lot 2292
