CARVED AND PAINTED WOOD CIVIL WAR SOLDIER WHIRLIGIG.American, second half of 19th century. With carved facial features and mustache, the figure wears a military hat with leather strap and a blue and white uniform. The rotating arms hold saber like swords that serve as wind paddles. Head made separately and connects to body with pivoting peg, allowing for variable positions. For comparable examples, see lot 95 from the Weiss Collection-Skinner Auction Feb. 2007 as well as lot 400, Skinner auction Nov. 5, 2006. SIZE: 25″ h (paddle extended) x 6-1/2″ w.
