RARE PAIR OF CARVED STATUES OF CHINESE WOMEN. Late 19th/early 20th century. Each figure commissioned by a movie theater in Youngstown, Ohio. Depicting women in traditional floor length robes, one holding a lotus blossom, the second a fan. The statues carved from the solid in pine, the plinths of laminated pine. Both carved with angular features. Each mounted on a square notch-carved plinth. Carvings of this type were generally used as advertising props, in this case as lobby statues for the above mentioned movie theater. Most common examples are tobacconist figures from the same period. These were removed from the premises when the theater was demolished in the latter part of the 1900s. SIZE: 55″ h. CONDITION: Statues original. Retaining original paint under later surfaces.
