CIVIL WAR RECRUITING POSTER 16TH MAINE INFANTRY.

This is a rare and possibly unique massive poster for one of the heaviest engaged Union units during the Civil War. This poster is a massive 40″ x 29″ and has vignettes of soldiers, liberty, justice and other patriotic motifs over 1-1/2′ tall on unusual peach colored paper. “STAND BY THE FLAG AGAIN OUR COUNTRY CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS”. Colonel Asa Wildes of Skowhegan, Somerset County Maine raised the 16th Maine Infantry. The unit went on to have among the heaviest causalities of any regiment during the Civil War. At the Battle of Fredricksburg on December 13, 1862 of the 450 men of the 16th who were engaged in battle, 226 were killed, wounded or missing. With ranks depleted and only a few new recruits, 248 gallant soldiers of the 16th entered the battle of Gettysburg, 231 were killed, wounded or missing with only 2 officers and 15 enlisted men left remaining. SIZE: 40″ x 29″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fair-good as mounted on linen. Several cracks at folds. 3/4″ x 1″ loss of paper at center fold as can be seen in picture.
