SPECTACULAR FIVE COLOR CIVIL WAR RECRUITING POSTER “FIRST VIRGINIA BRIGADE”.

Wonderful patriotic recruiting broadside with 22″ x 14″ vignette of George Washington surrounded by justice, liberty and panoply of flags. Acting General William Wall was a New York Congressman who never saw military service but Lieutenant George A. Bulmer was an officer in the elite New York Marine Light Artillery which recruited mostly from New York City and had 90 men and officers die during the war. This poster is most likely unique and has no peers. In it’s sentimental vignette and appeal in its request for a mere 35 able bodied men. If you wanted one spectacular Civil War broadside this might be the one. SIZE: 38″ x 23-3/4″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fair to good as laid on an oversized piece of linen. Numerous small cracks and folds. Small paper losses of which none affect text or aesthetics. There are 3 cracks that have been backed with tape on the reverse or have been removed from the obverse. Typical soiling and acid burn but a marvelous poster still exhibiting rich, subtle color. 9-93046 (3,000-4,000) – Lot 2283
