CIVIL WAR RECRUITING POSTER FOR PENNSYLVANIA HEAVY ARTILLERY.

This beautiful poster has a large patriotic eagle vignette with ribbon in beak with patriotic mottoes “LIBERTY AND UNION, ONE & UNSEPARABLE” on either side of text are 21″ tall vignettes of a soldier and Lady Liberty with American flags. Colonel Charles Angeroth is appealing for troops in “…the only regiment of the kind called for, and the service is the most desirable of any in the army. This regiment will always be stationed in forts or temporary fortifications, and consequently avoid the exposure and hardships of the ordinary soldier.” Well, Colonel Angeroth was right, Heavy Artillery troops for first three years of war saw routine garrison work in the fortifications of Washington D.C. for the most part but early in 1864 General Grant decided he needed more men to be part of the charges to take Richmond as fast as possible with little regard for mass causalities and the 2nd PA Heavy Artillery now fought as the 112th PA Inf at the battles of Cold Harbor and the battles around Petersburg. This unit had limited casualties prior to 1864 but would have total losses of 616 men killed, mortally wounded and from disease. SIZE: 28″ x 24″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fair overall as laid down and mounted on linen. Numerous small flakes of paper at folds however poster will still present well and brittle paper can be stabilized by a paper conservator. 9-93040 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 2279
