FEDERAL GIRANDOLE MIRROR WITH HORACE GREELEY PROVENANCE. First quarter 19th century, probably New York City. Circular convex mirror plate within an ebonized slip all within the conforming molded frame fitted overall with spherules flanked by and fitted with scrolling candle arms with old electric socket mounts within, the arms applied with leaf tips. The crest with a carved displayed eagle on a rockwork plinth flanked by scrolling leaf tips, additionally applied with leaf tips beneath the frame. NOTE: Beneath heavy paperboard of mirror backing is a period ink inscription “Yours Horace Greeley, Merry Christmas 1830”. Horace Greeley, a New Hampshire native was known as a prominent journalist and political activist in New York City. SIZE: 34-1/2″ h x 27-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Mirror retains all original elements and gilding. Spherules with substantial losses to gilding. Small wood patch mend on backside. Also old small chip loss to foliate carving on backside. An old crack or break with glued repair to wing. Otherwise good. 9-92087 (2,000-5,000)
