RARE 1861 “HURRAH BOYS!!” RECRUITING BROADSIDE FOR THE 97TH NEW YORK INFANTRY.

Large 38″ x 24″ broadside with pencil notation to meet September 8, 1861 at the height of patriotic fervor in Herkimer & Onidea Counties, NY. Colonel Charles Wheelock who would go on to become Brevet Brigadier General and died before war’s end. Lt Colonel JP Spoffard who is listed as a recruiting officer, had just joined the service a month before on August 5, 1861 and had a great career in the unit. He would be part of staff commanding the unit at battle of Antietam, a year after this meeting in September 1862 with this units heavy losses, over 100 men killed and wounded. Colonel Spoffard would be captured at the battle of Gettysburg and later escape from the famous Libby prison in Richmond, VA. Colonel Spoffard like his commander would be Brevetted Brigadier General in March of 1865. John V. Ferguson, the regimens chaplain who addressed the men at this meeting would also serve with the 97th till near war’s end with mustered out November 1864. It seems to be rare to find an early war poster listing so many personalities who stayed in the unit until the war’s end. This is a rare and possibly unique poster that we can find no listing of other examples ever sold. SIZE: 24″ x 37-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fair as mounted on paper backing with glue stains, cracks at folds, reductions that only affect a few letters of text as can be seen in photographs. This poster displays beautifully and could be further conserved if wanted. Poster was not removed from frame for further examination. 9-93048 (400-600) – Lot 2271
