FINE MAHOGANY, GILT WOOD AND EGLOMISE BANJO CLOCK BY WILLIAM CUMMENS, ROXBURY, MA. A fine early American clock in the style of Simon Willard with painted dial, gilt front with eglomise throat glass and door panel reverse painted with Boston State House. Face moldings are gilt, case is mahogany. Dial painted “Warranted by Wm. Cummens, Roxbury”. William Cummens (1768-1834). He was known to have worked in Roxbury as a clockmaker as early as 1789 and until his death in 1834. He learned the trade from Simon Willard and Elnathan Taber. Being in Roxbury, Cummens could use the same suppliers, casemakers and dial painters that the other local clockmakers used, making his clocks similar in form. He was one of the first persons authorized by Simon Willard to manufacture the new patent timepiece. SIZE: 33″ t. PROVENANCE: Previously offered and purchased from Sotheby’s New York, Americana sale, June 22, 1995, Lot 284. CONDITION: Appears to be all original including painted panel and brass side scrolls. Minor losses to reverse painted tablet. Original key, pendulum and weight are intact. Clock remains in operating condition with intact movement. 9-92700 (3,000-5,000)
