IMPORTANT HOLLOW MOLDED COPPER GRASSHOPPER WEATHERVANE.Last quarter 19th century attributed to L.W. Cushing & Sons, Waltham, MA. This fine and rare example with well detailed body and with strong verdigris surface. The grasshopper retains back spine and cardinals, now with museum stand. This form of grasshopper vane is pictured on pg. 18 of the 1852 “Catalog of Weathervanes Manufactured by L.W. Cushing“. For the sale of a similar example, reference Lot 268 “Important American Furniture, Folk Art, Silver, Prints and Decoys by Christie’s”, January 18, 2007, New York. SIZE: 27-1/2″ total h x 40-1/4″ l. PROVENANCE: The grasshopper vane was acquired from the previous owner from a barn near Aroura and Rising Sun Indiana, during a re-roofing of that barn 1995.
