IMPORTANT POLYCHROME DECORATED LEEDS CREAMWARE JUG OF AMERICAN INTEREST. A large turned and clobbered creamware jug with 3 separate areas of notable decoration. The first and most significant is under the spout and reads “Let Not Liberty be Sold For Silver nor Gold Your Votes freely give To the brave & the Bold”. The decoration on the side includes a depiction of a plow and the words “God Speed the Plough”. The other side has a depiction of a sheaf of wheat and reads “Success to the Grain Return’d”. Of great significance is that the pallet used in the foliated decoration, as well as the plough and the wheat, is the same pallet used on the “Prosperity to the Province of Pennsylvania” teapot. The red parallels the decoration on the famous “No Stamp Act” teapot. The terminals of the strap handle have an applied floral decoration including what appears to be pine and pine cones. The coloration of the terminals is purple, green and yellow. The base and the rim are green. This form and pallet is known on various dated examples in the 1770’s. A coveted centerpiece for any 18th Century American historical ceramic collection. SIZE: 8-1/4″ h x 4-3/4″ w. CONDITION: Generally very good for its age. Strap handle is completely in tact and unbroken. Base is undamaged. The rim has several cracks emanating from the top downward. Cracks vary from 2-4″ and number approximately six. Some pieces have been glued back in. A tiny piece is missing. There has been some restoration work on the left of the spout and the tip of the spout. The piece is somewhat though lightly stained throughout. 9-91611 (10,000-25,000)
