IMPORTANT PAINTING OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BY WILLIAM POST (AMERICAN, 1720-1800). Oil on canvas, half portrait showing Washington wearing a black coat, white shirt, and having white curly hair. On canvas verso is written in period artist’s hand “W. Post paint / Danville”. Housed in a replacement period gilt frame. NOTE: Research with the help of the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library of the New York Historical Society has found that William Post according to the 1789 City Directory was listed as a “painter and glazier at 43 Water Street, New York City”. In earlier advertising he called himself a painter. William Post’s business is well documented as the first American art supply store opening in 1754 on the waterfront in New York City, which eventually became the Devoe Paint Company. It was most known as an importer of all supplies and materials needed for painting. In 1793, his colour shop was probably the best known establishment of its kind in the city. Another fact that may be important to this painting is that George Washington lived at 3 Cherry Street in New York City in 1789 (this is within one block of Post’s house and business in the year George Washington was inaugurated as President in New York). SIZE: 27-1/2″ x 21-1/2″. Overall: 34″ x 28″. CONDITION: Very good. Original canvas with strip lined support at tack line to stretcher. Minor scattered spot inpainting (before pictures and conservation report from Yost Conservation LLC is available. 9-90261 (50,000-75,000)
