INTERESTING AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE PERIOD FACSIMILE OF LINCOLN’S FINAL DISPATCH. The tissue document in ink mounted to an album page. Accompanying the page is a hand written note signed “Respectfully yours, H.C. Harmon” (Second Auditor in the Treasury in 1862 who later named his son U.S.G. Harmon. The note is addressed to Mr. French (E.B. French, Secretary of State, Maine). The note states “The enclosed is a fac-simile of the original taken by me yesterday. There is no doubt of its authenticity – it was endorsed yesterday by Gen. Grant for a gentleman from Louisville, KY. As the last dispatch seen written by President Lincoln in relation to the operations against Lee, and so cha___-_______ of Lincoln it is a valuable souvenier – keep it if you desire. You will observe that the dispatch was sent but two days before Lee’s surrender.” NOTE: With the help of James M. Cornelius, Ph.D., Curator, Lincoln Collection, of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum of Springfield, IL, we have determined that this is a tracing off from the original. The original was in the Charles F. Gunther collection between 1890-1920. We believe that it is possible that the tracing was done during this time or possibly earlier. We do know that because Harmon indicates on his note that it is “but two days before Lee’s surrender” that is was not done at the same time as the dispatch was written. At the top of the tracing, the collector “Hiltin” has written “Copy of Lincoln’s last dispatch, Hilton 10.16.” PROVENANCE: A Maine collection. CONDITION: The note in very good condition; the tissue showing glue marks, folds and toning. Generally intact. 9-90941 (300-500)
