JOSHUA CHAMBERLAIN LETTER. 3-Page ALS, March 10, 1865. Written for the father of Weston Keene who was killed at the Battle of Peebles Farm,VA. Sept. 30, 1864. Chamberlain mentions that he will shortly take control of the 20th Regt. where he will look over the father’s other son Daniel Keene who later died during the war as an officer of a black Regiment. Chamberlain notes that “while I lay terribly wounded myself, gave me a deep and bitter pang of sorrow which will never be wholly removed” (regarding the death of Capt. Weston Keene). This is a great opportunity to buy a wonderful Joshua Chamberlain letter in very fine condition concerning two Maine soldiers, and a heart-felt sorrow displayed by Chamberlain to the father for the loss of one. Head Qrs 1st Brigade 1st Div. 5th Corps March 10, 1865 My Dear Sir, Yours of Feb 20th has been forwarded to me from (Brunswick?), as I had left for the field again before it has (written?). As you probably know, I have always taken a great interest in your sons, because they were good soldiers and good men, who conducted themselves in a manner to gain the respect and esteem of all associated with them. You may justly feel a pride in them, sir, as they have done honor to their name. I regarded Captain Weston Keene as one of the best officers in that regiment. The news of his death, while I lay terribly wounded myself gave me a deep and bitter pang of sorrow which will never be wholly removed. You already know that I have often recommended Daniel, first as a Sargent and afterwards as a Commissioned officer. For some reason the company and regimental officers have not cordially concurred in my opinion, and as I have not for a long time had command of that regiment, I could not interfere with appointments in it. The 20th is not among any regiments now, but I expect it will fall in to my command before long, and I will then see if something may not be done for your son. I do this with great cheerfulness in view of his merits, and with a mournful satisfaction in as much as I think that the sacrifice you have so nobly made of your affection & your hopes in the loss of your brave and good boy deserves recognition. I am, My Dear Sir, Your friend & servant, J.L. Chamberlain Brig. Gene. U.S.A. SIZE: 8″ x 10″ (unfolded) CONDITION: Very good, clear and bold. 9-90947 (1,000-2,000)
