IMPORTANT FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF CAPTAIN JEFFERSON DEVEREAUX.Large oil on canvas half portrait shows a young man holding his telescope with both hands in his lap. He wears a black coat with white shirt and is sitting beside an open window which looks out at his two-mast schooner “John Murray”. The schooner is shown in full sail, flying an American flag and ship’s pennant. There are five figures on deck and sails are full. Sailing right to left in white tipped green ocean. Housed in its original ogee frame. Important note: Accompanying the portrait, according to family history, is his telescope and sextant. The telescope has a partial leather covering, single draw and missing the eye piece. The sextant is signed “H. Duren…Blunt New York”. Brass fittings with multiple lenses present. SIZE: Painting is 36″ x 29-1/4″ Overall: 43-1/4 x 36-1/4″ Scope is 34″ long extended and 20″ collapsed. Sextant is 13″. PROVENANCE: From a fine Castine, Maine home where it has been in the hands of several families. The Devereau family are longtime Downeast residents, going back to the early 1800’s. CONDITION: Frame is missing veneer on bottom. Painting is lined, surface dirt, restored with inpainting. Telescope shows use, fair.
